Game of Thrones’ Costume Designer Michele Clapton gives insight on the attire of various characters’ costumes for Joffrey’s royal wedding.
“Cersei is pulling back a little bit. She’s not the power house that she was, and I wanted her to be slightly quieter. She’s still very beautiful, but just not rocking the red so much. I think she can see her power is abating.”
“I wanted the Tyrells to look very much of a group. I tried to formalize it with the rose fabric, the fabric of their family, as this was being done for family. I wanted it to sort of be a traditional dress in a funny way, but then roses can be so pretty and I didn’t want them to be pretty - I wanted them to be slightly dangerous, because I think [Margaery] is. And it just sort of literally grew from there”
“This is Joffrey’s wedding, it’s meant to be this huge celebration of Joffrey. Remember, when he took over from his father, he re-designed the whole hall. So this wedding had to be more opulent, over the top.”
“Tywin does wear red, which is rare for him. He’s very proud to be a Lannister, and he wants to be seen to be proud to be a Lannister, so he’s brought out the red. He’s come to the fore a little bit — I play with colors, and try and push people forward and back.”
